[THE INVESTOR] LG Innotek and Apple are developing a new 3-D camera module for the next iPhone, Korea Economic Daily reported on Nov. 23.

“Apple is considering adopting its own 3-D camera technology for LG Innotek’s smartphone camera module,” an industry source was quoted as saying. “Considering LG Innotek owns its 3-D camera technology, the outcome could come next year.”

Dual-lens camera of the Apple iPhone 7 Plus

Apple acquired Israeli camera technology company LinX Computational Imaging for US$20 million in April last year. Using an array of sensors that capture multiple images at the same time, the company specializes in creating 3-D image mapping.

LG Innotek is the sole supplier of dual-lens cameras for the iPhone 7. The dual-lens camera technology is considered crucial for 3-D cameras as they see depth in the same manner as human eyes.

The parts unit of LG Group declined to confirm the report.
